'Hi AllI have been following the PT Brake issues these last few days and have been experiencing some of my own Hayes Brake problems on our UC-61K.Seems the right brake expands, but does not retract completely. We thought it to be the expander tube, so I swapped that out wit our only spare one. replaced all the pucks and made sure the springs were all in the correct position.  Installed onto the plane, Bled the system and same result.  I am having the rotor turned today, just to make sure its not our of round.
Has anyone had a similar problem with their Hayes set up?

Hi Jim
To the best of my recall the brakes are supposed to just release not retract. I know on the big ones ( Douglas C-124 ) there was a regulator valve on
the backing plate that you turned the pressure up while using a feeler gauge to set it to about .0015 clearence. The republic SeaBee also had like regulator valves. When I converted my F24 to clevlands I found that I could not back bleed the brakes as the
master cylinder trapped pressure requiring I drill a new bleed off hole. The whole thing of Hayes brakes is they take know how and extra care or they can lock up on you say nothing about finding parts. But I am now  trying to satisfy my local FISDO to get
a field approval. I liked it better when it was the CAA. I never did bother to find out how to adjust the clearance on the F24. The plane I got had suffered a locked brake on landing which ground looped and took the gear out from under it. I have yet to see
a clevland lock up. A good practice on any tail dragger with toe brakes is to leave your heels on the floor and off the brakes until the rudder and tail wheel stearing fades then you are not as likely to tare things up.

Hi All

I have been following the PT Brake issues these last few days and have been experiencing some of my own Hayes Brake problems on our
UC-61K.

Seems the right brake expands, but does not retract completely. We thought it to be the expander tube, so I swapped that out wit our
only spare one. replaced all the pucks and made sure the springs were all in the correct position.  Installed onto the plane, Bled the system and same result.  I am having the rotor turned today, just to make sure its not our of round.
