'Any ideas on the proper (or close) knob for the ends of the control stick?
Are they Bakelite?

'David,  Great response Tony.  To answer your question, yes Bakelite. They were from the Willis Jeep stick knobs.  As Tony stated, only black in color. You could paint them with two part with flattener to match the other knobs. Currently my customer has Bakelite coming from Russia. Assorted sizes to machine into stick, Throttle, and other control knobs.  Bakelite is not available in the USA. We moved on. The Russians have not. The new modern plastics don’t machine as well. 'I looked at the knoba on a hand beading set to tubing.  I think that the set came out of Cleveland.  The knobs are identical with one exception, the threads are female versus male.But if you can get them through a vintage auto parts place, great.

' I put PTT switches in those stick knobs I got from McMaster-Carr.  I chucked them in my lathe and drilled holes into the center with normal HSS drill bits.  I used a small boring bar to size the holes just right for my PTT switches.  The material of these knobs does not melt or soften when hot, nor does it produce a continuous chip.  They drill nicely with a very frangible but firm, small chip that appears to be just a black dust.  I think the material in these behaves quite a lot like Bakelite – definitely not soft – a thermosetting plastic, not a thermoplastic.  I don’t think it will melt no matter how high the temperature, but rather burn, like Bakelite does.   Just one more clarification – I did not intend to imply the throttle knob from Aircraft Spruce was the same item as the McMaster-Carr knob above.  The throttle knobs have a smaller thread – I think it’s a 1/4-20.  They are the same size and shape, though, including the same knurled band around the “equator”.  They look like they are made from the same material, in same mold.  It does not appear McMaster-Carr offers those knobs with a thread size that small, so if you need one, buy it from Aircraft Spruce and you’ll know they are compatible with their throttle cables, and will match your stick knobs from McMaster-Carr.  You can buy this cable: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/a800.php if you are bound and determined to have an FAA/PMA approved part, and swap the knob out for this one:   http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/frictionth1.php   That’s what I did, probably unnecessarily.  The non FAA/PMA approved cable is the one I mentioned earlier: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/frictionth.php  It comes with the big oblate spheroid type knob you want.  By the way, as far as I can see, there is no externally discernable difference between the FAA/PMA approved and non-approved throttle cable assemblies, other than the knob style.  I cannot imagine there is any difference of any kind other than the knob style.   Tony Lowe   From: 'Jamie Treat' jamietreat@q.com [fairchildclub] Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2017 9:57 AM To: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [fairchildclub] Flight Control Stick Knob
