ELT experience

'At last year's June annual for my PT I found that the ELT batteries were dead. Could not find a reason for the depleted batteries but did wonder if I had been sending out an emergency signal. I'd guess not since the sheriff didn't show up at my hangar or home.
Replaced the 4 D-cell alkaline batteries. At this annual the 1 year-old batteries were down to 1.1 volts - not enough juice to fire off the emergency transmitter. Again could not find a reason for the poor battery condition.
This is an Ameri-King AK-461 unit. The FAA has recently gotten on Amer-King about their products.
I do carry a Spot 2 Satellite GPS Messenger on board, and it does send off a message when I ask it to. But I also want something that will activate itself in case I do something really stupid.
I'm looking for another ELT to mount in the tail cone. Any recommendations?
