pre-oil new Ranger

'Dear List,
I have a newly overhauled Ranger almost ready to start for the 1st time.
What's the best way to pre-oil? I have a pump I can use to pump into the
engine most readily at the oil pressure fitting. Is there a better
method or a better place to pump oil? In the past I've pre-oiled Lyc's
by removing a plug in each cyl and cranking. I always feel like I'm
doing the starter a disservice even though I crank a little then rest
for a good while, then continue until I finally see oil pressure. Still,
I don't like to stress the starter. What's the best way to do the Ranger?
Thanks,
David'
