Hi gang...I was testing all the lights and my landing light came out and worked, but would not retract when turned off...anyone had this happen or have any ideas??  Thanks, Tony

'That's what I was thinking I haven't found anything yet I'm getting ready to take the light out of the wing which is kind of a jerk I was just hoping maybe somebody had had this happen before and trying to see if there was something nominal or rare

'I would say, the switch itself is broke.  When the lamp extends, the internal contact turn the light on as it nears the down position.  The switch, center position, on the panel turns it off.   If it doesn't turn off, means the switch won't come out of the extend position.   Sounds like the internal contacts are welded together.  Then retract is only done through the switch.   Note: when I took my airplane apart in the 70's, the AD for the electrical feed to the fuses had not been done.  It was still 18 guage wire.Bob

'I would definitely check power at the (out of the) switch before I took the light out of the wing. I don't have the wiring diagram in front of me, but if someone would send me the diagram (or a sketch of the circuit) it should be pretty easy to isolate.

' would not retract when turned off...anyone had this happen or have any ideas??  Thanks, Tony Your center position on the switch is off, and down position will retract.  To me, if you can't turn it off, either in the center position or won't retract, the switch is hung-up in the extend/light on position.  If you feel little or no resistance or feel a slight clunk when you move the toggle;  it is broken internally.  If some one were to place a jumper across contacts to force to retract,  not good.  Maximum smoke may be the result.  Dropping the lamp and disconnecting the power input cable is an option.  The outer shell of the connector is Ground.  One pin is for extend, and the other is for retract.  Oops, I am referring is a ST-1220.  If you have a ST-250, and it is Grimes, I would suspect they are electrically the same.  If you are checking the power at the connector and you get nervous, put in the smallest amp fuse in the circuit for the lamp that you can find.  It makes a much smaller spark.  My ST-1220 is fused at 25 amps.Another thought, open the J-box above the left rear window.  There is five terminals. "L"  to "G" is for voltage to extend and operate the light.   "M" to "G" is for lamp retract.  Bob

  Yes it is a three position switch so I'm guessing the retract contact is not working I will research that today

  My landing light switch has three positions. 1. Extend - On2. Off (Center)3. RetractAfter use, I switch off, let cool, then before shutdown, I retract and then center switch.  Yours too?David

' I have a somewhat similar situation.  I have two of these lights – one in each wing – Grimes.  The little pot-metal block that holds the axle of the large gear has crumbled on one of mine.  I’ve got the unit out of the wing and have drawn up the part and will try to make a replacement.  I think I have properly recorded the connections, but will proceed cautiously.  The biggest problem for me is to get the limit switch phased properly – in the right “range of motion” so the light does everything right, i.e. extends, lights and retracts properly.  There is some adjustment.  I’ll likely jig it up on the bench to get it right before re-installing the unit in the wing.  I’ll have to make the little replacement block in two pieces to sandwich the axle bearing, which was cast into the old pot-metal block.  I’ll probably use a little J-B Weld to ensure the hold on that axle bearing.  I’m planning to machine the block from aluminum.  My airplane was built as a F24W40-A and is now a 41-A as of a change to the 165 Warner back in 1951 – N28522 S/N 136.  Inside the little oblong can covering the limit switch of the failed Grimes unit there was an inspectors sticker dated 1934 – new, like it was just put there yesterday!  That Grimes unit is 6 years older than the airplane.  That’s archaeology for you.   From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, February 22, 2016 5:08 PM To: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [fairchildclub] landing light     702-482-9243 if you want to chat.
