Steve:

I just overhauled my struts this spring. If I remember correctly, I had to jack up the plane up to 43 inches. Removing the wheel also gives you more clearance.  This is for removing the whole gear assembly. That would be the casting with the strut still in it. Don't forget to put weight on the hand holds at the rear of the fuselage.

' Wow, I had not thought about the shift in weight as the jack pads are BEHIND the mains!!!! Very good point! I just got an e-mail from Mark Howard. He just jacked his PT-19 today and the pad was at 31.25" at rest and 39.5" to get the main off the ground. I am trying to figure out which jack stand I am going to get.

I plan on purchasing these, machining a plug for the bottom of the tube for a double ram jack so I can jack to needed height, then lock the jack in position and bleed the pressure off. Will Probably have to cut a short part of the tube to fit the jack under it. Who knows, I might get lucky and have the jack ram fit inside the tube!

' Sorry, one more point. I guess it would not have to go so high if the strut oleo was compressed and strapped in that position to hold it.

'The maintenance manual states that you should have at least 150# at the rear lift handles.

'Michael, what would be the harm in using a ratcheting strap to hold it in the static position for changing a wheel out? Even if I removed the strut, the ratchet could be released slowly. I don’t plan on compressing it past it’s static position at rest.  From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com [mailto:fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com]

'Michael, what would be the problem with having the scissor tied to keep it from extending out more as it is jacked?  From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com [mailto:fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com]
