'
So I am going to try and overhaul my struts since I may have found new packings/seals in some boxes of parts I got when I purchased my airplane.

The most important part of this process will be to use the correct fluid. Does anybody have an idea of what fluid and where to get it?

Thanks'

' The F24-46 manual says to use AAF Spec 3586C same as used in the brake system, which is Lockheed No. 5, Lockheed No. 12 or Delco No. 7 or some equivalent.  The manual also specifies the same fluid for the tailwheel strut.  In the section for maintaining the brakes, the manual says this is a non-petroleum based fluid.  I’m not sure what the equivalent fluid is nowadays.  Others should chime in, please.  I’ve heard of people using Mil-H-5606, Skydrol, etc, but I’d think it depends on your brake system and strut seal material.  My particular airplane has DOT 5 silicone fluid in brakes and struts.  Not sure I would have done that, but it was done before I got the airplane, and I understand it is now very difficult to totally clean out the silicone-based fluids, and they are not compatible with other fluids, so I’m sticking with what I’ve got, optimal or not – it is working, and has been for some time, as far as I can tell.  I would be interested to hear what others are doing or recommending, just as you are, I’m sure.  By the way, my airplane has the original expander-tube brake system.   Tony Lowe F-24W41A  N28522 Minneapolis Area   From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, May 30, 2015 8:19 PM To: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Subject: [fairchildclub] Oleo Strut rebuild on F24
So I am going to try and overhaul my struts since I may have found new packings/seals in some boxes of parts I got when I purchased my airplane.

The most important part of this process will be to use the correct fluid. Does anybody have an idea of what fluid and where to get it?

Thanks'

'All,  Have never found the old spec oil in stock. What has been used in the past is the following with success.  Tail and MLG struts – Acft 5606, Dot 5 Brake fluid, Auto Trans fluid (no issue with seals with old or new seals)  Brakes – DOT 3 (very harsh on system and paint) DOT 4, and DOT 5. (Never us 5606 in the old brake system. It will swell master (MK-33 Seals) and Hayes bladders) They will lock up…. If you convert from Hayes to Clevelands but leave the old Plymouth masters, recommend DOT 5  I use 5606 in struts and DOT 5 in brake system.  As Tony mentioned, no mixing of Petro and Syn type. If it happens, flush repeatedly with denatured alcohol. Then do it some more. It will foam up if contaminated.  What ever you do, mark the struts, Brake masters with what type. Also annotate in log book. Big bright bold lettering. I would also recommend a Fluids list be generated and passed on to the next owner.  Trying to service an aircraft at annual that is unknown, just tastes bad:)  JST      Look at the Email's from around May 21, regarding Throttle linkage.  Jamie passed to me that 5606 hydraulic oil will do fine for oleo's.Bob    From:

Subject: Re: [fairchildclub] Oleo Strut rebuild on F24    The F24-46 manual says to use AAF Spec 3586C same as used in the brake system, which is Lockheed No. Tony LoweF-24W41A  N28522Minneapolis Area From: on F24
So I am going to try and overhaul my struts since I may have found new packings/seals in some boxes of parts I got when I purchased my airplane.

The most important part of this process will be to use the correct fluid. Does anybody have an idea of what fluid and where to get it?

Thanks'
