'I have been using Aeroshell 120 for several years in my ranger and was wondering if anyone has used the Phillips 25W60? Just curious about switching and if anyone has any advice one way or the other. The Phillips is about $150/barrel less expensive but if there is any doubt I'll stay with aeroshell. Upstate NY starts cold and can be quite warm as well.

I used 120 aeroshell in two engines. I run my Ranger at about 1950 rpm at cruise and, generally, the engine runs cool. I experienced stuck rings due to carbon fouling quite a bit along with fouled plugs. This might be just that I run the engine cool. I have a new Antique Aero Engine rebuild now and used 100 mineral for the first 25 hours and then switched to Phillips. Before doing this I talked to a Phillips engineer for about an hour (he was proud of the product). Mulitgrade Phillips is what Lycoming now specifies for breakin of all turbocharged engines. The engineer explained that to make a single-grade heavy oil like Aeroshell 120, base stock (about 20-wt) is mixed with what they call bright stock. This is a good quality lubricant that is the very thick by-product of the fuel cracking process. The only downside of bright stock is that, when it is burned, it leaves a great deal of carbon. If the Ranger wasn’t an oil sucker, this might mean very little carbon in the combustion chamber. But the engine does burn oil and, hence, quite a bit of carbon residue. Multi-grade oils use a polymer that thickens when heated – hence the oil doesn’t thin out that much when it’s hot. The good part of these polymers is that, when they are burned, there is very little carbon. Anyway, I like the Phillips. I don’t need to change grades seasonally and the engine runs clean. Only had one plug foul in the past 100 hours and it had a bad resistor. My 2 cents. Ranger Mike From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com [mailto:
