'Fairchild enthusiasts:

My father, William C. Whitesell, (Ex Eastern, Ex Pan Am) got his instrument rating in a Fairchild F24W -N38E. Does anyone know if the airplane still exists? (the registration no is now on a Cessna) Best I can come up with is that the Fairchild he flew was serial number 2935, Warner powered.

I am also trying to find the PT-19's he flew early in his career from Camden New Jersey registration numbers N46390, N69134,
N58148

any info on these airplanes would be much appreciated

'The only thing that I think that I know, is the Fairchild was an old CAA bird. Painted Black & orange. There was one in the Kansas City Missouri area, maybe Independence in the early 70's. It was N??E, and I think it was a small tail bird. The guy that had it was sort of an area legend. I think he even has some really old de Havilland's.

I won't have time to look into it until Saturday.

'I haven't as yet found the photograph that I'm looking for, but I did find some other stuff.

I found in Juptner's Vol 7, of his "US Civil Aircraft"(pg.122) that the CAA purchased roughly 60 each 24G Standard's. The list showed that 20 had 2 digit "N" numbers. (NC??). None of them showed the "E" that I remember seeing on the one in the KC area. It may have been added later.

The s/n of the NC38 in the book was #2935. Looking back at your Email, the "E" was added sometime after they were purchased from Fairchild.

I would like to verify the probability of the E addition to the N (NC) number of the Fairchild was because the CAA sold it to the civilian market.

I once had the last Ryan STA built (SN 355) that was built in the middle of an early run of what I assume to be the PT-20s It was built in December 1939.

I wrote Ryan and received the original pick up papers signed by Len Povey, and the contract papers from the CAA. It was ordered with bare metal fuselage and good old CAA orange wings. The CAA number was NC-9 and when I got it the number had been changed to NC-9E.

Like an idiot I sold the airplane, but I still have the papers mentioned - somewhere!

..I really appreciate the investigative effort here. I stumbled upon Dad's old logbook, thought we had lost it -mom lost her entire house in a flood in 2009 -Dad flew N38E in Camden, New Jersey, during a two week period in August of 1951, logged just over 13 hours to complete his instrument rating. The instructors signature is hard to read, but the name looks like O. Pobey, Instructor number 5170-40. In March of 1952, just 7 months later, he signed on with Pan American and was trained as a Copilot on the Douglas DC-6B!

I just connected the dots - my Dad spoke very highly of Len Povey, back when I was struggling through my instrument rating..... and I realized after your email that he is one and the same as my Dad's log entrees in the Fairchild. Small world!

'I guess I generated a little interest with my blurb on Len Povey. He was quite a guy apparently and there is a fair amount of information on him if you Google the good gentleman.

I had heard he started Batista's air force but according to the info, it sounds like he more like resurrected it. Rumor wise he was supposed to have gotten to be a Cuban hero when he did some acro at night over Havana Bay with roman candles or something similar on his Waco. They loved it. This is not verified. He also invented the Cuban Eight maneuver which is verified.

I stored the fuselage of my Ryan in an old barn that was owned by an old Eastern Airlines Captain when I was doing a little recovering on it, and I told him about Povey signing the pickup papers. Apparently the Eastern guy knew Povey and his comment was that was CAA's bribe to get Povey to come to work with them. Or in his terms, get the SOB to work for them.

He also worked in coordination at some time with Col. Joe Mackey and I guess they airshowed together back in the good old days.

Last tidbit of bull here. I have a friend where I live that worked for Mackey Airlines for a while. He still refers to him as Col.

'I did finally look through the photo that I have was looking for. It was fron the Kansas City Area Chapter Fly-In in 1972. The tail number was N23E. Black & Orange. I believe that his name was Leonard. Last name and pardon me for it, I think it was something like "Speck". My eyes tell me that I am spelling it or remembering it wrong. For that I am sorry. I think I only met him one or twice in the early "70's". It was a "G".

Mr. Etter,

I would like to verify the probability of the E addition to the N (NC) number of the Fairchild was because the CAA sold it to the civilian market.

I once had the last Ryan STA built (SN 355) that was built in the middle of an early run of what I assume to be the PT-20s It was built in December 1939.

I wrote Ryan and received the original pick up papers signed by Len Povey, and the contract papers from the CAA. It was ordered with bare metal fuselage and good old CAA orange wings. The CAA number was NC-9 and when I got it the number had been changed to NC-9E.

Like an idiot I sold the airplane, but I still have the papers mentioned - somewhere!

I haven't as yet found the photograph that I'm looking for, but I did find some other stuff.

I found in Juptner's Vol 7, of his "US Civil Aircraft"(pg.122) that the CAA purchased roughly 60 each 24G Standard's. The list showed that 20 had 2 digit "N" numbers. (NC??). None of them showed the "E" that I remember seeing on the one in the KC area. It may have been added later.

The s/n of the NC38 in the book was #2935. Looking back at your Email, the "E" was added sometime after they were purchased from Fairchild.
