'Our Fairchild went salvage today.

I simply can't rationalize the time and commitment to repair it, the lowest bid to repair was $49K

I was 60 when I started this project, I'm 72 next month. that's a long time on one project watching the market eat us up.

It's simply time to move on. lick our $$$ wounds, and see what we can do in the future.

Sorry to read your words this morning. You beloved Fairchild will have a new live in one way or another. You have still all the memories. At 72 you have a lot to give. A friend of mine, 75, stopped flying this summer. Gave up his certificate. He said that his plane was flying faster than himself. He sold his J3 Cub, (he had it for 32 years) and after a month he was back on the field. Now with young people telling them the stories and joy of flying. He calls it “ the ultimate freedom”.

Tom we are all with you.

Find a nice LSA (Champ, Chief, J-3 type). Keep on flying. You have many good years left. My father just retired from flying after 68 years of flying (89 years old). Army Air Corp, class of 43C. The main reason he stopped was his Aeronca Chief was just worn out. I Rebuilt twice for him, last time 25 years ago. Same airplane for 44 years, sits in my hangar for the third restoration.

'Jamie, we aren't quitting we are just moving on, If you know any one that wants an easy fixer clue them into my aircraft. If it is done by the owner it will cost less that 10k to repair. The Warner has 4.3 since we did the IRAN and it runs sweet. the wings are not hurt, and the fuselage has some wood repair to do on the belly formers, the fire wall is bent, as is the exhaust pipe. It is mostly cosmetics, but required to be airworthy again.
the wheels and brake system are ok. Instrument panel, windshield, Lights, strobes, gyros, radios, flight controls, tail feathers, cabin box, all undamaged.

any one wanting this as a project call me, 13602020961 I can take a lessor check from the insurance company and retain ownership of the aircraft and then sell it for the cost of the engine.

I haven't been reading the list as regularly since I sold my 24, so I missed your note on the ground loop. Welcome to the small but always growing club. I took some comfort when I noticed that the first time my 37 G was repaired for a ground loop was 1939.

My '37 was insured, and we settled on Monte Zema, who owns Colville Aviation Service in Colville, WA (about 40 mi N of Spokane) for repairs. He did a great job and definitely has experience in repairing 24 G gear struts. Also, he got field approval for installing an Alaska Bushwheel steerable tailwheel actuated by rudder horns. Can't say enough for how that improved ground handling.

Monte found that a bushing was missing from my Warner mechanical brakes, causing them to grab and lock. Replacing that bushing made them as good as discs. (Three other A&Ps with IA couldn't figure that out) Monte has a ground transporter that can get your aircraft to his facility (I ground looped in Joseph, OR).

I'm sorry for your loss but glad you came out unscathed. As you have so often demonstrated, metal, wood and fabric can be made like new in the hands of a skilled craftsman. People aren't always so lucky.

My aircraft was totaled by the insurance company, and will be taken to a storage facility and sold as a rebuilder by sealed bid sale.

Many folks have e-maild me for details and I have sent pictures out to most of them.

As soon as I know the sales web site I will post it here for those who wish to bid.
