'One advantage to the JB Weld procedure is that the cover does not have to be
removed to drill the oversize holes for the helicoils. I suspect if the
cover is being removed anyway, then the helicoil is probably a more
permanent and accepted method of repair.

Pretty common problem and I have used helicoils as the solution. But anytime
you can fix something with JB Weld its pretty cool.

For what it's worth, I had a similar experience before having my engine
completely rebuilt last year by John Ellis. I removed five pulled cam cover
studs and cleaned them and the holes with carb cleaner spray. Blew them dry
and reinstalled them with JB Weld. I let them set up for a couple of days
and replaced the nuts to 70 in-lbs. This may not be considered proper
repair, but it worked.

While checking the torque (80 in/lbs) on the cam cover nuts I found 4
pulled studs.
Can the 'Ranger Gurus' out there please tell me whether Helicoil inserts
are a 'doable fix' or should I go another route (oversize studs)?
I don't think Helicoils were around when the repair manual was printed.
