Ranger pulled Cam Cover Studs

'While checking the torque (80 in/lbs) on the cam cover nuts I found 4
pulled studs.
Can the 'Ranger Gurus' out there please tell me whether Helicoil inserts
are a 'doable fix' or should I go another route (oversize studs)?
I don't think Helicoils were around when the repair manual was printed.

'For what it's worth, I had a similar experience before having my engine
completely rebuilt last year by John Ellis. I removed five pulled cam cover
studs and cleaned them and the holes with carb cleaner spray. Blew them dry
and reinstalled them with JB Weld. I let them set up for a couple of days
and replaced the nuts to 70 in-lbs. This may not be considered proper
repair, but it worked.

'Oversized studs are a pain because of the different sized nuts you'll
encounter next time you remove the cover. I've gone the helicoil route with
good success.

'One advantage to the JB Weld procedure is that the cover does not have to be
removed to drill the oversize holes for the helicoils. I suspect if the
cover is being removed anyway, then the helicoil is probably a more
permanent and accepted method of repair.

Helicoils it will be - and the cover will have to come off.
This engine has been in store for ten years after a rebuild in a certified engine shop! not only this but the mags were wired to the opposite side plugs.

I am getting the 'firewall forward' built up on a stand and do not really need this extra hassle - But what's another day or two after twenty years?

PS. John - What would be the recommended torque for installing these studs? I can't find it in the 'Table of torque values'.
