'Thanks to those who replied. I did find two coil assys and condensers. Replaced same, all is well. Since I replaced both, not sure which was giving the trouble, just wanted to get it running again so did not replace one then the other. Based upon experience with another radial I'd say it was probably a condenser. but not sure. May try them out singly later.
While searching for parts I spoke with Al Marcuci at Savage Magneto. Late in the week he called me back to say that he had heard someone was making up a batch of new coils. Not sure of details, but there is that word. Condensers seem available, coil assy seems to be harder to get.
Also recently had to R&R right fuel tank due to leak, started small but got worse. About a 2" stress crack in seam at base of pressed out sump, plus a couple of smaller leaks. Sent out to Sinclair Aircraft in Hampton, NH for repair/welding, a real nice job. Then, a pretty fair bit of work to restore fabric and match, etc. All OK for now.

The only trouble that I ever had with the VMN7DF as the oil paper seat for for one of the bearing had dried and the outer race started to turn I wear the paper. It started to wobble in the seat. It caused some serious mis-fires. It didn't show up until after the motor was warmed up. For some unknown reason, (I was holding for 15 minutes) I did a second Mag check prior to take off (attempted) and I was greeted with a second of silence, followed by a large bang.
When I took the mag apart, one of the out bearing shell fell out into my hands.
Anyone the works around P&W 985's can help you. They use the same basic unit, but no spark retard. That can be removed from your old Mag and added without much difficulty.

I have the Club CD, but have never figured out how to navigate it. Does anyone know is there an index or the like I am missing?
Also, I have had trouble with a VMN7D magneto on my Warner 145. Thinking coil or condenser. I have located a couple, but it seems these are hard to come by in general. Does anyone know of a supplier? Thanks.

The Smithsonian told me that they are relocatng the archives and will resume making copies next year sometime. I have the complete list of Drawings for the 1946 F24. Joining the Fairchild Club and purchasing a copy of the club disc will get you quite a few but not all, but there is alot of other good information. I know of several other Fairchild owners including myself who are looking for drawings as well. I would be glad to send the list, just send me an email at
higham_jim@yahoo.com and I will atach it to a reply.
