'Hello all,
I had a couple of questions for all of you regarding the Warner 165 and the Ranger 200HP engines. For a little back ground, I was part of this forum before and I had asked some questions because I was considering purchasing a Fairchild 24. IN my searches, I ended up buying a Stinson 108 instead. I tell youthis because I have found my old threads and I am used to classic aircraft. However I'm short quite a bit of info on the engines used on the Model 24 and I am considering adding to my aircraft and I need some info if I am going to do this.

I will take each engine in turn and ask a couple of questions and any information that I have found on my own.

Warner Scarab (165hp) radial
As I understand this engine, there isn't a TBO because normally every 400 hours you tear it down to clean out the sludge buildup because the engine doesn't have an oil filter. I have also seen a company called Radial Engines Limited that says they will no longer work on these engines due to a shortage of parts. So, I ask the following questions:

How reliable are the Warner radials?
Can you get parts and/or overhauls for these engines?
What would an overhaul cost?
Can you add an oil filter system and are there any STC for an oil filter kit?
Is there anything particular to this engine that someone new to Fairchilds and radial engines need to be aware of (I'm aware of the hydraulic lock precaution)?
I have seen both fixed pitch wooden and Aeromatic propellors in pictures. What type of propellers are available?
Are there any spinners available for the Warner?

Ranger (200hp) Inline
I gather that there are a lot more of these engines available since Fairchild made a lot during WWII for their various aircraft. I have far less info on these engines as far as TBO, places that work on them, or oil filtration.

How reliable are the Ranger engines?
Can you get parts and/or overhauls for these egines?
What would an overhaul cost?
Can you add an oil filter system to the Ranger?
Are there any STCs for an oil filter kit?
I have seen fixed pitch wood and Aeromatic propellors in pictures. What types of propellers are available?
Are there spinners available or necessary?

Finally, which engine is considered more desirable? From my searches, it appears the long nose 24s with the Ranger engine have higher asking prices than the Warner powered aircraft.

Thank you in advance for your help. I greatly appreciate any info that you can give me.

Sincerely,
Karl
