'Hello all!

I am working on my 1939 Fairchild 24R, and have run into three issues that I cannot seem to resolve. Wondering if someone could help??!

1) Fuel Lines. The original fuel lines are steel, and have been spliced MULTIPLE times - two splices per line, just to the fuselage. I would like to replace the old lines with new rubber; this would eliminate many sets of adapters, and be easier to work with. Does anyone know, can I run new soft fuel lines in lieu of the old hard lines?

2) Fuel Sending Units. My Fairchild has the 30-gallon wing fuel tanks, with the sending units mounted on the bottom. The sending units are shot and i would like to replace them. The units are marked with "TRAVEL ACCESSORIES 240 OHM, AUG 1977". I noticed from an earlier post that Stewart Warner p/n F385-C seems to be compatible; anyone have any further information on these?

3) Grimes Landing Light. One of the landing lights does not work; the bulb lights up, but the motor does not function at all. I cannot even turn the large gear by hand. Does anyone know of a place that works on these? OR, are they easy enough to service?

You should be able to replace steel fuel lines with aluminum ones or even copper ones, as long as you make sure there will be no movement of the lines, which would lead to work hardening and cracking. I suspect that replacing with rubber might be quite questionable -- you better talk to the I/A that will eventually sign it off.

I replaced my fuel quantity sending units and gauges with Stewart Warners. I recall that the new sending units were designed to be mounted on the top of the tank, and had to be wired differently to use them on the bottom of the tank (ie. Full tank read Empty, and visa versa). I altered the face of the gauge to remove Stewart Warners name and add a small Pegasus.

The Grimes Landing Light is rare. It is not too hard to work on, but I think someone on this list was selling a nicely overhauled one for a pretty good price. You might be better off buying an overhauled one and trading in your core, or sell the core, or keep it for trade.

'The landing light can be repaired by Avlite in Paso Robles Ca. (Phone (805) 239-4037 Call for a quote. They have all the old parts. If you try to repair it yourself they will sell parts, However getting the limit switches set up just right is important, or it'll strip the big gear in a heartbeat.

Bending a new set of fuel lines from the wing attachment area to the fuel valve is a real pain for everybody, including myself. Don't believe there were joints originally between wing root and valve. Good luck! Don't know anyone that's tried flex hose. I used aluminum for replacement.

'Just went thru my light and got it working. It was bound up but principle problem was 74 year old grease had turned to shellac. Cleaned it up, light grease, works or. Previous to this it would not turn by hand, either.

My gas gages did not work, was bout to send them out, turned out bad grounds in each wing.

Thank you for your help. I somehow cut cut off a the end of the post, sorry to leave a note anonymously. Since leaving the message I was basically told the same thing about switching to rubber, so it sounds like some a/n fittings is the route to go.
