'I just got into my retract Grimes landing light again (G-2900-12), thought I had it fixed last summer but wouldn't work when tested again this winter. So, I really got into it this time, and discovered the main problem was the 74 year old grease had hardened into shellac. I cleaned it up, put a light grease on the gears, and looked at the motor. Turns out, the motor assy itself was incredibly pristene. Hardly any brush wear and all looked good. A little light oil on the bearings and it spun like anything. I also worked out a way to install a modern bulb into it to get away from the old light assy issue.

If you haven't looked at this unit, it's workings are a small mechanical marvel. I had thought before getting into it that the motor must reverse. Not so. The clever device only drives the major gear one way, and the slot and pin goes out, then in as the pin goes "over center". The geometry also allows much more mechanical advantage when extending against the wind, then quick retraction. Really a clever device. Pretty amazing to see what was "thunk of" way back when.

I now have another one from a 24W that I will look at next. Similar, but not exactly the same.
