Ranger - Stromberg carb for gravity feed for F24

'Hello,
Would anyone know if the stromberg NA-R4B carb has any mods done to it to suit gravity feed situation as for the F24 Model K. Mine has a 200HP 6-440C-5 fitted. Particularly would anyone know if there is a change in the float needle valve seat area. Trouble shooting a rough running engine at high power. A check of fuel flow at the carb inlet shows about 150% of take-off power consumption (19USG/hr) from either tank. However fuel flow into the carby bowl is a bit less than take-off power consumption. The ranger Installation book mentions a mod done at the factory to the carby for gravity feed fuel systems, but no more detail. Just trying to eliminate one possible cause. Has not always had the problem.
Any thoughts or information appreciated.

'Might check the float drop to see if it is large enough. This seems to be a
problem with the small continental four carbs. Might be for yours also.

'Had a 200 hp Ranger in a PT-19 running rough after the first power reduction
on takeoff. At any RPM from idle to full power on ground, ran perfect.. On
takeoff ran perfect until first power reduction, then started to run rough
and would not smooth out until RPM pulled back to around 1500.

Problem was a double wall scat hose connection from air cleaner to carb..
Inner wall came loose and was acting as a choke.. I looked a long time
before I found the problem.

'Contact Aircraft Systems in Illinois (815) 399-0225 Ask for the guy that overhauls old the stromberg's. Nice guy just can't remember his name. He did an excellent o'haul and sent it back with a spec's sheet for the NA-R4B Carb ( spec's sheet Manu factor's revised data 1949) I don't understand it , and it's way to technical for me. I do know he said the float level setting is critical for the old Stromberg's. Some set up for a fuel pump system some set for gravity fed. Give him a call; he won't pressure you into an o'haul. Have fun!
