'The pilots of America need your help, the government wants us to have pictures on our pilot certificate, this procedure will cost $210.00 each 2 years. This requirement is a total waste of money and makes you no safer than before. we in General aviation have never been a threat to you NEVER. yet every time we turn around we get hit with more and more regulations to try to prevent us from flying.
Please call or e-mail your Congress critter and lets stop this stupid Idea.

This is not a specific Fairchild topic, but as it was posted here I will reply - sorry if somebody takes offence.

Excuse me my ignorance, but how did you end up with the sum of 210$ per 2 year. I read trough the proposal and have a hard time coming to this sum. I admit it might be a little bit confusing to calculate the cost, as the document is using current $ (value as of 2008) and future $, but in the document it is stated:

The cost impact to any one pilot and to any business would not be large. The
average cost to a pilot in a ?non-trigger? event is higher than that of a ?trigger? event as the
time and mileage needs to be taken into account as well as the portal costs. The average
cost for a ?non-trigger? event is about $175. These commercial pilots would have a phasein
period of 4 years and then would have to renew every 8 years. Thus, over a 20-year
period, such a pilot would have to get 3 pilot certificates, for a cost of about $375; the
average annual cost is $19, which is not a significant impact.

What have I missed?

I live in Europe and are not so familiar with the licence procedures by FAA, but they cannot be far off from ours. We do not have picture certificates here yet, but I am sure it will come.

But on another note - I agree the fear for terrorist action is overblown in many cases, and makes the life for us pilots much more difficult - and costlier. I know, II have been flying commercially for 35 years.

'Thanks Tom--just seems like they had already addressed the picture ID problem with better solution than what they are proposing now.
