'Finally have the Ranger engine running on my PT-26 project, then realized there is some conflicting information on valve clearance.

The Ranger Instruction Book (as revised in 1992 by Fairchild Club) shows a 0.015" clearance for both intake and exhaust valves for both checking valve timing and running. This is what I've adjusted the valves to.

Other (older) sources indicate 0.030" for the exhaust running clearance.

What has been the experience of others regarding good exhaust valve clearance? I would appreciate some advice.

'Hi Charles,

If you will look at the data plate on the upper right side of crankcase, I
think you will find the info you are looking for.

For timing: intake .015 exhaust .015
For running: intake .015 exhaust .030

You will need to remove cover and re-adjust exhaust valves.

'I'm not sure why the Fairchild Club changed the instructions. The overhaul
manual tells us to time the cam with both intake and exhaust set to .015".
Once the cam is timed, go back and re-set the exhaust valves to .030, which
makes good sense if you think about it for awhile and that's been my
practice.

I know Mike Denest monitors this group from time to time. Maybe he will
chime in here.

'Always, always, always refer to the manufacturers instructions first and
foremost.  The instructions referenced in the Fairchild club document is
incorrect and needs a revision.  Leaving the exhaust valves set to open at .015"
is an invitation to disaster.

'Thank you all for the feedback on exhaust valve clearance. I've just finished readjusting them to .030", now for the reassembly.
