'I have seen a few pictures of Fairchild 24's where there is a spacer/bolt outboard of the left rudder pedal. I don't understand what this spacer is for. Any ideas?'

'it is a lock-pin in order to use the locking device for controls.

on left handside you've a lever you can lower, this one has a ring to lock the stick, and some kind of tooth locking le lock-pin.

(it was serial equipment on military UC-61 for example)

'Airy,

I recall once seeing that on a UC-61 drawing and being fascinated with it. I don't think that I have ever seen one on an airplane. Wonder if anyone has one installed, and if they could post pictures. I recently installed a 'control stick lock' on a Piper Cub, and now believe in the value of such a device.

'Thank you for clearing that up. In the back of my mind I had an idea that's what it would be for. 99 44/100% of the pictures of Fairchild 24's that I have seen were not of the UC-61 variant. In those pictures some people, when restoring their aircraft still use the spacer when assembling the rudder pedals. I, too, think it would be a great plus to be able to lock the flight controls.

I have beaten Airy to it I'm afraid. As my restoration is still 'Wide
open' I took some photos of the 'Device in Question' this afternoon. as
someone mention a Cub control lock I have included a shot of my
installation as well.

'So, you may notice, that with the steering tailwheel locked, when you lock the stick+rudder, you lock the plane position on the ground in the same time, then the plane may only roll front or backward!

Some years ago, we were going to believe there was a problem with a F24 during an airshow, when pushing the plane by hand out of the static display to the airshow display park...the tailwheel can't release position!

Some, where already seeking tools and asking for problems to the plane...and as I open the door, (I was thinking about manoeuvering with rudder pedal)... I just had to unlock the commands!!....

Now it makes everybody who knows about fairchilds laughing a lot!!

:o))
