'Hey Guys ...

I am in the process of completely rebuilding my Hayes brakes. I have found a few small issues but overall everything appears to be in good shape. A couple of the spring strips that go between the pads have lost their temper. I can bend them with little effort, they basically have no "spring" action left. I noticed this by stacking all of them on top of each other and there were a few with significantly less arch than the others. Anyone know where I can get a few of these? Also, the packing in the fitting that attaches to the stem of the tube, should it be a a small rubber doughnut? If this is the proper seal, can new ones be found or are they fabricated from a piece of rubber tube of the correct dimensions? Copper crush washers (2 sizes)for the fittings? Auto parts store?
Were the original internal steel parts of the brakes galvanized or aluminum coated? My tube backing plates had been painted, doesn't appear to be a very good idea, the paint had blistered and made a mess of things. I stripped the paint and it looks like the plates were originally coated with something. Any suggestions on refinishing the plates? Thought about powder coating but it may be too thick and cause problems with actuation of the components.

The good news is that I got two new tubes and two sets of brake pads with the airplane when I bought it. Not sure what I'll do the next go around.

Thanks for any assistance,

Matt
