'I see Fairchild 24 tailwheel issues have been a high interest topic in the past. I'm wondering if there is a mod to add a locking pin that would make it stay oriented straight ahead for takeoff and landing? It seems that would be a way to stop the shimmy problems.

'On UC-61K, there is already a locking pin, but the problem is that it wear year after years, then you will have to rebuilt.

The unlocking of those tailwheel happen when full rudder is applied left or right!

That's why, when you are landing under high cross wind, you may unlock at the same time as correcting the wind!!



It is the locking pin, which make the wheel stearable..unless you apply full rudder, or brake heavily at one side when turning!

As much as possible most of the time we try not to use brakes at all, as they are heating quite rapidly, and loosing efficiency!

'it may be possible, at first modifying the "unlocking cam plate" to lock the steering anytime...and then adapt something to unlock from the cockpit, like a "warbird" !!

but the shimmy, is not really due to the tailwheel itself, but due to geometry!

old tailwheel have shortened springs (coil springs shorten under fatigue along years)...and the front arm, may be redesigne a little bit shorter should be better!



but such mods are useless if there are to much play in the tailwheel assy (especially on the pivot parts, which can be badly worn).



and the "unlocking" angle can be adjust by loosing or thightening the c?ble linked to rudder.

I am replacing the old fabricaded bracket with a billet 4140,Hardened and cad plated I should have it done soon and will get a 337 on it or a STC if there in enough interest.the old brackets were welded solid to the tail rear section cross tube. Also working on a tail wheel lock set up.Also almost ready to cover my airframe ,Alan
