Ranger engine oil level

Post by michaelmps »

'I am flying a PT-19 for a friend. What oil level do you find that works best. When I bring it up to 4gal cold, it ends up everywhere. The owner says he thinks it needs 4gal cold but I think that is wrong. He is old and dosn't remember where the plane runs best.

'My Fairchild 24 K holds twenty quarts (tank was modified). If I get down below 17, I tend to get sudden (scary)fluctuations in oil pressure. I try to not let it get below 17. I can't say what it should be on a PT-19, but I would be interested in hearing a definition of "it ends up everywhere".

'There is something wrong if you cannot use the whole oil tank!

On our F24R, we have a modified oil tank, and we can run the engine with only 4 or 5 galons (but it tends to go too much warm....even using Aero120 in warm summer).

'I think the book says that with a 4 gallon tank, you shouldn't allow the
oil level below 1 1/2 gallons. I'll check on it to be sure.

'I keep mine about 3.5 gals. If I keep it topped off, it seems to blow out. The bottom of the bevel of the spout for the oil filler cap seems to work for me and minimizes excess oil on the airframe. I have the same issue with cessna 172. It calls for 6-8 qts. If you fill to 8, it blows all over the plane until it reaches 6qts. Fill it to 6, and it will stay there for a long time with little blow-by.
Hope this helps.

'Don't forget, this is the minimum before take of...

of course, after long flight, the level can be quite low...
