'Afternoon guys ...

Could use some assistance on gear leg fairings ... When I bought my
24W46 it did not have the oleo strut fairngs installed. It turns out
that in my parts pile that I got with the plane, I have the two upper
sections but not the lowers. I am also missing the two removable
mounting brackets that go on each strut to secure the fairings.
I am basically looking for the lower sections of the strut fairings,
the mounts, a set of the intersection fairings from the gear leg to the
wheel pant and the small LE and TE fairings that go on the gear legs
where they intersect the fuse. I can fabricate these parts if need be
so I am open to anything... unserviceable used parts that I can use for
patterns, serviceable parts, drawings or paper patterns, loaners to use
as models.. whatever you have that might help me re-create these
missing pieces.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

have not had a single other offer for help with my gear leg fairings
since posting my request. I was under the impression that this site
was the best avenue for sharing information and providing support to
other owners trying to preserve these wonderful classics. You can't
tell me that many others have not had to recreate these fairings
during their restorations?
Did I miss something? The iniation maybe?

'I don't know if I could be of much help. My fairings, all 4 pieces, are still pretty much in semi original condition and not installed. I did, many years ago, 35 to be exact, I saw the forms for the lower sections. They were cast iron and matched the interior of the fairings. I think that they beat the aluminum to form it to the shape of the form. Probably welded a wedge to the lower front to fill in where the metal would have been split, in order to make the curve outward and forward.

I can take pictures of what I've got, and look to see if the holes were reinforced, at the holes on the inside, with steel, or what. I think that Istill have some of the original brackets. Even those probably have been repaired.

I think you just experienced the initiation

I've found that many times our club members just don't care. I've posted several things in the past with little to no response. I walked away with pretty much the same attitude.
Many of us have collected parts along the way that can assist others, but only have one of a kinds for the rest. I'm more than happy to share what I've learned and what we have. I'm happy to send parts list of stuff we have if your interested. Put all that in the newsletter some time ago with little response.
Would like to see your project sometime if I'm in Georgia.

I would be interested in anything you have on these fairings. I know that I am probably going to have to recreate the pieces myself... I don't have a problem with that ...I'm kind of looking forward to pounding out some aluminum. I really didn't expect anyone to give up valuable or serviceable parts of their own...unless they really want too ..

. I was just hopeful that others in the group have been through this same exercise during their restorations and might be willing or able to help.

I related your fairing problem to the fellow who I am helping with
his and he said it would be OK for me to take some digital pictures
of ours. We have some but I havn't looked to see if we have all of
them. We may also have to make some from scratch. I remember that
there are welded seams where they go from convex to concave- which
shows they were made in halves and then welded. I think 3003 in
maybe 040 (?) might be possible. I;m not sure if a hardwood formblock
would help or if the roughing out and streaching would be better done
with a bad and mallet. we'll be learning as we go !

Thanks for looking for extra tail wheel parts. We may only need
a bearing if the hub is correct. I will send you a pic of the hub
with the fairings so you can see if it the same hub !

Forming them is not a major problem but it would be nice to have patterns of them so that I can create the new ones to be as close to original as possible. I would almost have to make paper patterns and traces of the intersection profiles. Very difficult to do without having the actual part in your hands. Do you also have the lower section of the oleo strut fairnings? They have a nice flare that rests on top of the wheel pant. I have to make these as well. The only other pieces I am missing are the two small caps that cover the bolts at the leading and trailing edge of the gear leg where it attaches to the fuselage. Very easy pieces to pattern and make.

I don't know if I have any bearings ..if I do, I can't promise that they are not old and worn ...I'll just have to check. They appear to be standard tapered roller bearings and could probably be purchased from an industrial bearing supplier if you gave them the dimensions. With these old airplanes you can't always obtain "approved - aviation" parts. There are only a few bearing manufacturers in the world anyway .... most all quality bearings come from the same sources. Timken, Fafnir or NSK would be good.
