'For any of those interested ... my new 24 is home safe and sound in
Georgia after a 1900 mile drive from Montana. I began the disassembly
process on Tuesday with the help of Frank Felke and had the airplane
loaded in the truck by Friday. Believe it or not, a radial powered 24
will fit in a 26' U-Haul van... with only an inch or two to spare in
every direction. The permanent part of the wing struts are actually 4"
wider than the door opening but a simple waggle of the tail and she
went right in. If I get some time I may try to post a few photos later.
Tonight I will start uloading the pieces and begin the re-assembly
process. I can't wait to get her in the air.

I am helping my cousin restore his 34 model c8c . We have been
working on it for about 3 months. Fuse is repaired and blasted -
primed and painted. Next putting back in all the cockpit controls.
Next will be the firewall and gear legs. also figureing out the
fuse. formers and stringers.
I have heard some talk of failures of the gear legs possibly
where they attach to the fuse. Do you have any more specifics
on this ? Is it at the little "ears" at the top of the gear
that the bolts go through? or is it just the bolts breaking
due to ground loop induced side loads ????????

'Tim,
I'm new to the Fairchild and by no means an authority on any aspect of the airplane. Their are guys in the group that have a great deal of experience with these airplanes and they are much more qualified to speak on these issues. That being said I'll tell you what I know and you can take it for what it is worth. It is apparent to me that my gear legs have been repaired several times. Thre are doublers welded all over them around the attach points. This tells me that there have been issues with the legs although I beleive that the primary focus of inspections has been on the fuselage attach points (ears). I have not had a chance to read the inspection requirements in detail but in my opinion it is all suspect and should be checked at every postflight and/or preflight inspection in addition to the regular scheduled inspection intervals.

Hope to get some photos up soon.
