Sensenich propeller

'Dear members,
Anyone have information on the propeller indexing for a Sensenich
wooden prop. I took it off and had it reconditioned because of a
slight vibration. I felt this vibration in power off descents. At
least I thought the vibration came from the prop. I didn't pay
attention to positioning as I took it off. I've heard that the Hub
drawings for my Warner #8559 Hub indicates the blade should be lined
up the Hub keyway when installed. After prop reconditioning I hung it
that way. I still have a slight vibration. I can't come up with any
information on how the prop should be positioned on this type Hub.
Anybody have any information. I've always read how smooth these Ranger
engines were and I'm just not seeing it yet Thanks for any help.

'Take a look at the AN5017 wood prop hub spec(similar to the Warner
hubs) in the "Files". It specifies balancing the hub along the
longitudinal centerline, but makes no reference to the keyway when
balancing. It does note the areas on the hub where material can be
removed to achieve balance so it may be that the hub has already been
adjusted for the missing spline.

Likewise with the crankshaft. I assume it's balanced to account for
the extra material on the prop shaft.

'All six of my ranger engines as fitted to F-24's and PT 19's have all ways
been smooth

from 650 rpm thru 2350 rpm. The blank spline on the crank shaft aligns with
no "1" stamped

on the back side of the of the Prop. Look some where else. Bob Haas.

'I just checked for endplay by pulling on the prop, and I feel none.
Zip..Nada. I always thought there should be just a little. Anyway, as
it sits now everything is mounted and bolted down so I'm not sure
which blade is number #1. The plates cover the markings. I do remember
seeing #1 stamped on the prop, but don't remember if I had enough
sense to line it up with CRANKSHAFT slot, keyway, or whatever the term
is. When I first mounted this prop I did line up a blade with the
keyway, just not sure it was number #1. If I understand you Bob. If
the Crankshaft is rotated til the keyway faces directly up, then the
hub of course would only go on one way, and then the prop would be
mounted with number #1 blade straight up vertical. Does TDC on
cylinder number come into play here also? Any way to tell which blade
is #1 without tearing this all down?

I suggest you first call Sensenich to determine applicable
installation procedure for your propeller and then obtain a copy of
the procedure from Sensenich's web site. The procedure will specify
the correct positioning of the propeller-to-hub and the assembly to
the engine plus suggestions to correct vibration.'

'Tom, when I said check for play at the tip. To check for a
broken crank. There is a big ball

bearing to control thrust just aft of the prop hub. I meant at the tip of
the prop with a clock wise

and counter clock wise movement. Unlike most aircraft engines you will feel
no slop. In any case to

find which cylinder is # 1 ( the rear end) pull the spark plug at the
front on the exhaust side the

easy one, stick your thumb over the hole, move the prop tip clock wise till
you feel suction keep

turning you will feel a change to pressure, when the pressure is at its
peak that is TDC combustion

on #6. 360' or one revolution on the prop will be # 1 cylinder combustion.
The wide spline will be

down toward the cylinders, perform the "clocking" at that point.

'I looked at the information that I have about Sensenich props. All it did was to fill my head with all the design information from diameter, blade design, propeller hub shapes and mounting hub specifications. Nothing about allignment.

I do have a prop from an Airmaster without a mounting hub. The model number, and specs are stamped on the side. Like someone said, there are a #1 & #2 on the forward face of the hub. It would be covered by the mounting hub. The F-24W prop still has the hub in place as you can guess. The allignment key appears at the 1:00 position bolt hole when the serial number/prop data is viewed at the 12:00 position. Where the #1 would appear, is anyones guess.

The fillister head screw that was on the crank that was used to key the prop hub was missing. Suggesting that the previous owner removed it because it ran smoother in a place other than where it was keyed. The owner did lead me to believe that for him it was trial and error when trying to find a smooth spot. And don't forget where it was when you took it off.

Another prop that I have, which says that it is rated for a 165 hp Warner, a Curtiss Reed had the key way alligned with the long axis of the prop. No #1 is visible.
