Ranger Mods
'New to the group, gentlemen.
I'm looking for details of the piston and cylinder head mods for
reducing oil consumption in the Ranger engine. I thought they might be
in the club's CD but John says they're not.
Anyone here who can help me get the specs?
Thanks,
Mike Danielle'

'It is called the Menasco Mod and is a few holes drilled below (above - it is an inverted engine) the oil ring on the pistons. No changes on the cylinder. John Ferrero did mine (J&C Aircraft Engines) and after break in about 50 hours I am down to 1 to 1.5 quarts per hour. I don't know if John still has new pistons or not.

Re: Ranger Mods
'I suspect he means 1 -1.5 quarts per hour. If you do a search on
Ranger Oil Consumption in the messages, you'll find several
discussions on mods, oil use, etc.
I'm on my 4th Ranger, one had all the mods(drilled pistons with
chamfered ring groove, sludge plug o-rings, intake valve seals, tight
bearings, etc), one none, one some, and my latest with none. All
have used between 1-1.5 quarts depending on how hard they were being
pushed. I've not heard anyone real happy with anything but standard
rings.
I'm don't think much, if anything, is gained with the mods. Resign
yourself to using over a quart an hour and if you get a bit below
that be happy. That's just the way Rangers are.
The lowest reliable consumption I've ever heard of is .75 quarts/hour.
