Part Needed: Coil Spring for Landing Gear sought

'Hi All,

My 1937 24G has been down since last August, when I ground looped it and
broke the usual collection of parts. Rebuild is nearing completion, but
yesterday I received a call from my rebuilder that upon disassembling
the right landing gear oleo strut, he discovered that the coil spring
inside is broken.

He describes the spring as about 1 3/4" in diameter, and 7 1/4 inch
long. Does anyone have an extra spring, or know a good source (ideally
with a part number) for the spring.

Thanks in advance...

'The only thing that I have see or heard of in the past, if you can't find a new spring, you could try to locate a shop that is capable of manufacturing a spring for you.

I know a friend of mine in Kansas City KA. need a tail wheel strut spring for a Waco. He went to a shop near the down town area in K.C. MO., and had one made. The only thing the fabricator wanted to know, "How many do you want and when?" All they really needed was the size of the material used, the spacing of the wraps, the diameter, and the length. They also had the broken as a pattern.

Check with any of the big time Hot Rodders in your area.

'The 4 original spars that I have showed only one area that may need a fairly close inspection. That would be the area around the wing attachment fittings, especially the bottom side. I didn't find any dry rot, but I did see stains, which I attributed to the presence of water.

The wing ribs did show a general failure in glue joint through out the wing, but it wasn't to the point of being really scary. Most of the deterioration I saw, was to the rear tips of the ribs in the flap area. Most notably, the trailing edge in the flap area turned upward slightly.

A note: The spars could be either solid pieces of wood, or up to 5 laminations. If the wings are getting in pretty bad shape, the through bushing used through the wing may be corroded. I have seen the bushing in a known UC-61 wing, and the bushings were all anodized and in good shape. A pre-war civilian wing, they were mostly corroded to some degree.(Not anodized)
