New airplanes, new engines

'Hi All,

If you received the latest issue of Flying magazine, you might have
noticed an ad from an Italian aircraft manufacturer named Aerolab. It
features a beautiful low wing, tandem open cockpit tail dragger with a
radial on its nose. Tag line was "for the lovers of old airplanes" and
boy, did they hit the nail on the head. It reminded me a bit of a Laird
Swallow without the upper wing. Pictures here:

Apparently, they are planning a high wing (parasol) and biplane version
(but no pics yet)


The radial on the nose is a Rotec (not Rotax) R2800; with seven
cylinders displacing 2800 cc and producing 110 horsepower, manufactured
in Australia.

In looking for more info on that engine, I found that Rotec will soon be
producing the R3600, essentially the R2800 with two more jugs. Here is
the info on that engine:

Diameter = 850mm (33.46") its 40mm larger than the diameter of the
R2800
Depth the same as the R2800 = 640mm (25.2")
Modified prop hub to accommodate the additional power and torque.
Weight has been established. Including all bolt on accessories and
the dual exhaust collector ring the weight came in at 123Kg (270.6lbs)
HP may be 150+HP (yet to be determined)
Will have a 3:2 PSRU for additional torque (resulting in 150+HP of
usable power when compared to the output of a "Flat" engine).

Now if a body really needed a Warner 145 replacement..... the weight is
OK, the diameter ballpark...

Anybody made progress on building Warners again?

We live in interesting times.
