by K VINYARD
'HELLO,
I'M NEW TO THE GROUP. I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A F24R46.
I AM LOOKING FOR AN ORIGINAL PANEL, AND MAYBE SOME INSTRUMENTS. THE PANEL IN MY AIRPLANE WAS HIGHLY MODIFIED. THEY CUT UP THE OLD PANEL BEYOND REPAIRTO MAKE THIS AN IFR FAIRCHILD 24. AT LEAST THEY DIDN'T CONVERT THE WINDOWS AND DOOR LOCKS TO POWER WINDOWS AND LOCKS.
I AM TRYING TO RETUN THE INTERIOR BACK TO ORIGINAL. I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR FOR THE PLASTIC TRIM RING FOR THE WINDOW CRANKS AND DOOR STRIKE PLATES. IF ANYONE HAS ANY OF THESE PARTS OR LEADS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
THANKS,
KEITH

'Keith,

See attached.

We have a member that builds new inst panels from tooling. Also have member that produces sub panels and glove box door.

Sub Inst Panels - Bill Kahl has the molds for the F-24 Post War Glove box and sub-panels. Contact him at bkahl@mindspring.com

Inst Panel - George E. Leighton has made the mold for the F-24 Post War Inst panel. Hump not included, easy to make. Contact him at 206-781-0536

As for door hardware, go to auto restoration supply places. Many available. Such as
Lebaron Bonney: (Antique Interior Supply) http://www.lebaronbonney.com

For interior material like the org post war.

SMS Auto Fabrics (503) 234-1175 "Sample D" for the Post War 24 Series interior (Seats and Side Panels)

Hope this helps.

Also we have a Fairchild CD ROM for sale through the club. Get with John. I create them, look for the next Flyer.

'Keith: I had my interior redone in original materials and colors.
The shop that did the work is Interiors By Dene (Dene Knight is the
owner), 6600 South Mustang Field Road, Hanger 1-B, El Reno, OK
73036. Dene's telephone number is (405) 262-8900. He does very good
work at a reasonable price and acceptable turnaround time. I got the
material for my seats from SMS Auto Fabrics at (503) 263-3535, they
also have a very good web site. I can't find the correct name or
number for the fabric, but tell them it was shipped to R&R Aviation
in June, 2004 and was Sample D on their sample list; they will be
able to locate the correct fabric with that information. The
headliner and sidewall fabric is a different material that I also got
from SMS, but I can't find any of the material information on it;
I'll be happy to send you a sample of the material if you think that
would be helpful.

The rings that go around the window crank handles might have been
chrome. My airplane had plastic rings, but I don't think they were
original. Of the restorations I've seen that claim to be "100%
authentic", some have chrome rings and some are plastic. The chrome
rings are available through Obsolete Ford in Norman, OK; again I
can't find the part number, but they fit and look great in the
airplane.

When you get your original panel, you'll be happy to learn that a
Garmin 250 or 300 GPS / Comm and Garmin 320 transponder fit perfectly
in the original size hole in the "hump" and there is still plenty of
room to install and perhaps even hide a modern intercom system; the
headset jacks fit perfectly behind the ashtray doors.

Good luck with your project.

Best Wishes,

'Brad,
Thanks for all the information, it will be a great help. My interior with be the next item after the panel. Who ever restored the airplane had very poor taste when it comes to the interior, plus they tried to make a modern airplane out of her. I am looking forward to returning her back to original, however I'm sure it will vary a little bit from 100% original.
I look forward to meeting all the Fairchild owners, so I hope to meet you at some of the flyins in the future.
Again thanks for the information.
Keith

'Brad: I tried to find a listing for Obsolete Ford in Norman, OK but forund nothing in the white or yellow pages. I also need the rings that go around the window and door handles for my 24. Would they be in a different city perhaps? Thanks! Jay N81285

'Yes Ford in their corporate wisdom forced them to change their name even though they had sold authorized Ford replacement parts for several decades.

'I think that you will find that the original ones, at least on the 46's, were plastic.

I was able to obtain the last two original doors, about 30 years ago, and both sets of handles. If you can read it, I believe it reads as "eschutcheon plate" for the Studebaker door & window handles. It is on the Drawing # 411104, in the lower right corner.

'Bob: You're right. I just looked at the drawing and compared it with
some color pictures of the Studebaker interiors from that vintage and
they are indeed plastic. I guess I'm now in the market for a set of
plastic eusteuchon plates for a 1946 Temco built F-24R..... I'm also
still shopping for a spare set of wing hardware. I want to build up a
spare set of wings using Bill Scheunemann's kit (new spars, everything
you need to build new ribs, including the jig, no hardware) without
taking my airplane out of service for a long period of time. I bought
one set of hardware several months ago (Thanks, Jamie), but still need
one more set. Any leads?

Many Thanks,
Brad Donner'

'The only thing that I can help you on is I have an extra front spar wing attach fitting and a coffee can full of bushings. They are from a military wing that I took apart. All or most of them are anodized and in good condition. I also have some pre-war civilian wing bushings, but most are corroded to some degree.
