'I've just purchased a 24W, NC8155 that was for sale on Barnstormers
from Tom Leatherwood. I had a good pre-purchase made & am having some
mods done. A Garmin 250XL GPS/Comm, a GTX 327 transponder & Jasco
alternator will be installed & some minor panel work & painting done.
Afterwards, I'll ship it to Germany to join my 8C Luscombe & Piper L4.

A couple of questions:

I've emailed the Fairchild Club but received no response. Do they
still exist?

Has anyone had experience having a plane broken down & containerized &
can recommend a business that can do this in CA? The plane is
currently in Pasa Robles.

Thanks,
Steve Whelan'

replacing with the alternator? If so please e-mail me a

Can anyone recommend any other mods to improve reliability, handling
etc, they would do to a newly acquired 24W? I would like to have as
much done or checked on the plane before I ship it, so I'm not
bothered with minor problems later. The plane has 110 hrs TT since a
major airframe & engine rebuild, so is in good shape.

What are some recommended landing speeds for the plane? I have 1500
hrs tailwheel time, including Luscombe, Pitts, Stearman/WACO & a T-6
solo endorsement. I understand the 24W is a pussycat, but my first
solo in any plane is always cushion biter. Any special items to be
checked on the first flight after assembly?

Also, what fluids are used in the brakes & struts? So far I've heard
H-5606, automotive brake fluid, salad oil, etc. What is the world
using?

Thanks,
Steve Whelan

'Steve,

Congratulations on your purchase of your Fairchild 24. Best of luck,
and I am SURE that you will enjoy it.

Regarding the Fairchild Club eMail address, it can always be found at
www.FairchildClub.com. It is "fchld@cvtel.net". If the preceeding
does NOT show, then the address is fchld_@_cvtel_._net without the
underscores.

Regarding puting a Fairchild 24 in a shipping container, I believe
that there was a story in a previous issue of the Fairchild Flyer,
that described someone's experience. I suspect that John Berendt can
get you a copy of that issue. John is at the aforementioned eMail
address.

Best of Luck.

'Regarding the type of brake fluid: A couple of weeks ago I had an
incident with the brakes on my 24W-40. Apparently someone,
somewhere, somehow put an alcolol based brake fluid (we think) into
one of the brake cylinders. This caused the rubber pieces to swell
and actually closed off the fluid return hole in the master
cylinder. This consequently caused the right brake to lock and I
landed without knowing that the brake was locked. Needless to say, I
ground looped. However, the wings stayed level and I did go off the
side of the runway but I missed all of the runway lights. Lucky I
guess. The lesson of the story is use DOT 5 Silicone Brake fluid ONLY.

'I agree, once you get the leaks (copper rings) stopped there are
no more maintenance problems.

'I don't know if what you found is similar to what I learned within the last couple of years.

I found that someone, some when, had put something into the brake system that a brake wheel assembly I have was connected to and it caused the natural rubber of the expander tube to go into a soft mushy state. Over time, it all returned to a hardened state, and the expander tube was useless. I put 120 pounds into the stem, and nothing happened, it wouldn't budge.

I had originally tried to use Dot 3 brake fluid, and didn't find anything wrong with it, other than it appears to be a good substitute for paint remover. I have since flushed the system a couple of time, and replace it with Dot 5. I immersed some of the brake parts into Dot 3 & Dot 5, and didn't see any degradation to the parts.

When I got everything repaired, I refilled with Dot 5. I turned the Dot 5 bottle into something that looked like an I.V. (IntraVenous bottle) bottle, I hung it from a point at the top of the cabin, and ran a clear plastic hose to the bleeder nipple at the brake assembly. I then elevated the tail of the airplane about 3-4 feet, to elevate the equalizer port between the cylinder and the reservoir, to allow all the air in the cylinder to be expelled up into the reservoir. Once I saw that the level of fluid in the reservoir was about 1/2 full, I slowly cycled the brake pedal slowly a few times to force any air that was in the brake line at the upper end of the landing gear leg down the line and out through the bleeder valve or suck it back into the master cylinder. The clear plastic line will let you see when the system is free of air.
