'I attached two drawings but prdogram will not send. If you care to send your email address, I will forward them direct to you.

Hi,

To adjust the end play of the crankshaft, you must use the laminated shim.
You can tighten the nut forever and it will not fix your problem.

The nut only keeps the crank in position. If you look at the attachments you will
see the nut, oil slinger, bearing, spacer, and crankshaft gear. No Adjustment...

The second attachment shows the laminated shim and housing where adjustment
is done. All adjustment is done by removing / adding to the shim.

There is a service letter from years ago regarding drilling a hole to lubricate
this bearing. I don't have a copy at this office, sorry.

hope this helps.

John

I last spoke about my crankshaft moving for and aft more than I
though was normal and thanks to all who offered advice.
I am in the process of the annual and I showed this to my mechanic
and he agreed it moved too much. We have removed the propeller and
want to tighten up the bearing nut. Looks like it takes a special
wrench, called a AT-137 in the overhaul manual. The specs say to
tighten it up to 550-600 Ft. Lbs (not looking at the book right now
but going from memory while writing this) but the overhaul manual
shows a picture of the mechanic hitting this AT-137 wrench with a
hammer and says to tighten it in this manner. Which is right?
We've also notice some oil leaking from the bearing. Is there a
bearing seal (don't see this in the manual) or just the laminated shim?
BTW where can I get laminated shim (should I need some) and the use
of the wrench AT-137 and the driver AT-139 for seating the bearings/
shims?
thanks

'Yes you need a special wrench. I'm in the midst of making one from a
wrench designed for the Lycoming 300(available from Radial Engines
Ltd, I think). It's almost correct, but not quite...the teeth are a
bit too large and the ID a hair small.

There is no seal, just the previously mentioned oil slinger.

As noted below, you may not need to tighten the nut, but simply
reduce the amount of shimming. Since it' laminated, hopefully you
can simply peel the one on your engine.
