'The left wing of my airplane is now cleaned up, repaired, varnished,
and otherwise ready for cover. Check out the latest pic in
the "Photos" section. Does anyone have any background information on
the white paint or dope that was sprayed on the spars? I've talked to
other Fairchild owners who have found this stuff on their spars; some
remove it, others leave it on. I decided to leave it alone as removing
it would have required using paint stripper or really aggressive
sanding media on my spars. I'd also like to own a spare set of post
WWII wing hardware. Anyone have a set they'd like to sell?

As always, I'm sticking to a very strict completion schedule for this
project. When people ask when it will fly, I always tell them "it will
fly on Tuesday". I don't know which Tuesday that might be, but I'm
quite certain it will be Tuesday.

'Just for information. I am in the process of finishing up with the
remanufacturing of a pre-war civilian wing and a military wing. Both were
mounted on a post-war airframe. From what I have seen, there isn't a dimes
worth of difference between the two.
The navigational light installation being the most obvious. The plywood
block located in the nose of each rib was a slight bit different in shape
and size between the two models, and the strip of wood that the anti-howl
strip fastens to is more robust in the later version.
If I were to make a guess, I would say the military wing and the post-war
wings are identical. To say that they were left over stock from military
production, yes, I think so.
I even had OD green upholstery on both rear arm rests. They just put
civilian upholstery directly over the top of the OD stuff.

already have some spare Ranger engines with mags and carbs and some
control surfaces (rough!); I'd like to end up owning some struts,
fairings, cowlings, and maybe some tailwheel parts (slides, springs,

For those of you who have followed my search for Chuck Gupton, the guy
who owned my airplane in Southern CA when it was on the cover
of "Private Pilot" in 1967, I finally located his son Scott, who
learned to fly in -605 and has many good memories of his family's 12
year ownership of the airplane. Scott is sending a large number of
pictures and other memorabilia relating to the airplane and I'll post
some of these to the photo section of the site when they arrive.
