'There's a lad on the list with a Continental or Jake on the nose of his F-24 and
I've forgotten his name. Might be another Russell. My question is for him or anyone
else that may know. When installing a larger radial than the stock Warner 165, I
guess one has to consider the extra weight and extra power and how it may affect
the front of the fuselage. Does anyone know if the fuselage of the 24 gets beefed up
with this type of conversion? Thanks.

'Hello David,

N-81332 has a 220 Continental on its nose. You might look up the owner on the FAA website and contact him. I looked at buying this airplane ten years ago, and still retain a couple of pictures in my files. You will need an appropriate prop also!

There is no structural mods other then new engine mount. You will need to
install larger fuel lines, move batt aft. Also be aware that the extra
weight up front will add stress to the landing gear knuckle joints. One
failed on a 220 24W46 in Fla two years ago. They were the light joints. The
heavy joints are rare. The Jake STC is not available anymore, the owner
declines to sell due to liability.

The 220 will give you a legal two place airplane with partial fuel, the Jake
will give you a single seat with full food. The 220 and the Jake is not the
way to go by any means.

Go with the Ranger 200 or Warner 185.

'Negative on additional "beef up"; our F24 has 30# in the tail but am going
to check the weight and balance as another owner in OK has a Continental 220
as ours and does NOT have the extra weight in the tail...

'Thanks for the quick replies on the non standard engine questions. We have an option
here in Canada to build an "amateur built" class plane from the parts of others if one
can prove that over 51% of the work has been done by the new owner. It's an interesting
opportunity and is the one I will be building under. I'll use a radial engine but it won't be
a Warner. That's why you got to buy mine, Jamie. My engine will be of Russian/ Romanian
decent and that's what I had planned from the get go. George Coy of Gesoco.com sells
a direct drive derivative of something similar to the M14P. It was a Kamov helicopter engine
which apparently is famous for it's high torque cam and is now available with a direct drive
nose case replacing the geared versions such as the M14P. New engines are available new,
for about $12,500 US in Vermont. On the other hand, those wealthy buggers with their Nanchang
Cj 6's have too much cash in their pockets and routinely remove the Housai 285 hp geared
radial and replace it with the M14P 360 hp radial. Nicely enough, the direct drive
nose case fits the Housai too. Those Housai engines can be picked up for well under $8K
with only a few hundred hours on them. So, dump the gearbox, sell the prop that comes with
them for $2K, mount a wooden prop on a direct drive nose case. The overall weight should be very
close to a Warner with a Curtiss Reed prop. In a nutshell, 220 hp for under ten grand
and no need to overhaul, these engines are available anywhere...and a radial to boot. Or, go
nuts and keep the gearbox, save even more money, have a 265 hp engine with a controllable
prop. Your penalty will be about 100 lbs. Rebuilding my 20 lb doors and changing out the
stuff on the panel will cure a lot of that. My goal is to build up a two place cross country
machine in the guise of a Fairchild 24 in Military drag with a radial engine.
I hope I haven't offended anyone by being less than traditional with my approach but it is
just too tempting to get the plane set up the way I would like it to ignore.

it. The mount was made by someone in California. (I am not near the plane).
I have not noticed any changes or additions to the firewall or tubing. I
will take a serious look the next time that I get near the project, which
will be next spring, for I am a snowbird, living at Winter Haven, Florida.
