Gear leg aft strut

'I finally got the fuselage home from the airport yesterday and with the fabric off,
I'm very pleased with the condition of the fuselage. The right wing is toast as
predicted though. The rear spar is broken right thru pretty much vertically in the
area of the strut attach fitting but the front spar is completely smashed thru in
the area just outside it's strut attach fitting. No one could figure how this damage
could have taken place as the D cell leading edge is pretty much intact. I've got
a spare rear spar and material to make the front spar is waiting 200 miles away.
A full set of new ribs came with the deal and the left wing is still covered and in
"as last flown" condition" which I suspect will be ok. The fabric all over is in real
good condition but will get redone with the rebuild anyway.


From time to time I see F-24's with an extra landing gear strut running from the
wheel area up to the fuselage in the step area. Is this a fix of some sort to prevent
the gear "swinging aft" in a rough field situation or is it just a stardard fitting on
some models? Anyone add these their plane? Thanks

'David The aux.strut is a modification not a requirement in the states.
Contact the club we have the information on this.

You are right about the reasons for the additional gear strut. It
takes a lot of load off from the bolts attaching the gear leg to the
fuselage frame.
The mod was (still is) compulsory for Swiss registered F-24's.

There are several ways to do the mod. The Fairchild Club has the
details.
