'Hello Club!
I'm finishing up an extensive annual on my F-24R46. The mechanic
signing off my work is having a difficult time excepting the rudder
return cable tension published in the Fairchild Instruction
book for F-24W46 and F-24R46 aircraft. It's the only manual I can find
that addresses cable tensions.
Rudder return cable tension is stated to be 169 lb. Please tell me if
anyone thinks this a typo, and what a more believable figure might be.

I looked at the Military Manual, no reference to cable tension anywhere.
Good question, seems high to me also.

'If you tighten up to the spec in the book it will cut the pulley in half in
no time, it's way to high. We tension the cable up to what we think is about
right which is a lot less than 169lb your engineer should know what tension
for that size cable should be. I would be interested to see what he comes up
with and compare with others so we can come up suitable advice to everyone.

'Thanks for the input about rudder return cable tensions. The 169 lbs
has got to be an error. Cable runs to the rudder horns, steerable tail
wheel, rudder pedal cable to idler station, and finally the rudder
return cables are all interconnected. Setting the tension on any one
of them seems to affects the whole circuit.
I worked out a compromise of 100 lbs. on the return cables, I know
that seems tight, but all the other cables kinda fall in place at that
tension. (i.e. rudder cables 51 lbs, etc) Also the tail wheel cable
ends up a tad firm at this setting which I was hoping will cut down on
the tail wheel shimmy I hear so much about. I think the return cable
and pulley can safely handle 100 lbs, certainly not any more. Test
flight in one week after extensive year long annual. Feet don't fail
me now!

'I looked at the airplane, and noted the approximate dimensions of the
rudder pedals. The arm that is connected to the rudder cables running
toward the rear of the airplane are about 5" long, (pivotal axis of rudder
pedal to cable attach point) and the place where the rudder return cable
attaches is about 2" from center line to cable attachment pivot. It does
tell me that since to two cables are working against each other, and the
rudder cable is at 50 lbs, the return cable would have 2.5 time that. About
125 lbs minimum.
I looked at the cable that had been installed at the time of
disassembly. It has the wrong cable ends. The book shows thimbles at both
ends, but no shackles. That sure doesn't seem to be right.
