'As a member of the Fairchild Club that used to fly a PT-26 (for the
CAF) to airshows and events in the midwest dressed as a WASP to
educate the young on WWII and to talk to those that had trained in
the great flying Cornell aircraft, I think that most of you will be
interested in the fly-in event that my husband and I host every year
at our little airport. . .
Be sure to put September 24, 2005 on your calendar as Lee Bottom
Flying Field will host the 9th annual Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels Fly-
In. With models like Staggerwing, Great Lakes, Stearman, and Spartan
Executive, the line up is sure to please every enthusiast.
Intended to be a relaxed event for pilots, the gathering fills a void
that your typical county airport fly-in can not. Beautiful scenery
and great planes mix to create something special.
Lee Bottom Flying Field (64I) is in Southern Indiana along a very
scenic portion of the Ohio River that is half way between Louisville,
KY and Cincinnati, OH. The grass runway is 3200' X 100', drains
extremely well, and is a private owned, public use airport.
This is our 9th year to host the Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels fly-in
and it has grown by around 20% every year - in 2004, there were over
210 airplanes in attendance (mostly taildraggers and older planes).
It's a very relaxed event with nothing really planned other than to
have fun and enjoy each others company, talk about and admire each
other's airplanes and oh yeah, some flying.
We strive to keep it a non-commercialized event. So, you won't see
$8 hotdogs, banners ruining the landscape, vendors, or admission
fees. And, there's no cost to camp. The only thing that we ask is
that you have a good time.
The local college serves a Chili lunch for a modest price(with
awesome cookies) in the afternoon on Saturday and a very light
breakfast on Saturday morning.
Feel free to come over the night before (Friday) and camp out. We
invite our local neighbors over on Friday night for a "Bar-B-Q Pitch
In Dinner". Everyone is welcome to the Pitch In and we encourage
those with planes to take our neighbors for rides. We have some of
the best airport neighbors in the world and this is our way of
thanking them for putting up with us during the year.
Most of the information is on the website www.LeeBottom.com.
I'd also recommend signing up for our "Almost Monthly" newsletter
called "NORDO News" - we have over 3000+ aviation nuts currently
subscribed. If interested, you'll see a place to subscribe from our
home page.
Hope to see you on the 24th . . .
