Rebuilding problems

'I have three problems that I would like to recieve advice on.
1. How many foot pounds to tighten the landing gear universals
( # 3328 and 3330) ?
2. Does anyone know where to get grease retainers for the
bearings on a Hayes 8 inch tailwheel?
3 I need the tapered packing used on the landing gear oleos. I
tried soaking the old ones, in ATF fluid but one still leeks quite badly
when I store them upside down. Has anyone ever tried rope shaped packing?
Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.

'Norb,
Recently rebushed my oleo universals. Hope you're aware of the AD for
early models F24's for
Inspection and replacement of old style universals. AD 46-21-01 I
believe. Bring up archive message
# 3409 for some earlier discussion on this matter. Also there is a
service letter from Fairchild along the same line, advising mechanics
to not torque down these universal bolts because it freezes up the
universal action. Use only a "snug fit" I believe was the term they
used. I used finger tight, plus an additional turn to line up the
castle nut. I also filled in any gaps where the bolt runs through the
assembly with thin fill washers. Plus there's no better time to grease
the crap out of the universal and bolt before assembly.

I tightened mine to the point where they just pivoted freely.
Good luck on #2 & #3.

Norb,
I went to a marina, and purchased some square teflon packing rope (3/8
inch or 1/4 inch maybe?). This rope is used for packing submerged
driveshafts. I cut this rope on a diagonal. Works fine for me.
