Fairchild N-number Identification

'I am looking at purchasing a Fairchild 24R46 project. There are no
logs or data plate. I am trying to determine its N number so I can
obtain records from thr FAA and register it some day. Is there a
serial number stamped anywhere on the fuselage. So far I haven't
found any. I know many other tube and fabric planes have a fuselage
production number or a serial number stamped somewhere on a tube or
small plate.
Question: There may be a data tag on its Ranger engine. If so, are
there any records or data anyone may have that can tell which engine
serial number went on which airframe serial number or N number. That
is, as long as it still has the original Ranger engine installed at
the factory. Can anyone help.
Thanks,
Ted'

'Ted,

I have never found a stamp on the frame. The Engine S/N may not match the
same from the factory. I have not seen a list anywhere from the factory
records. In fact the Factory records are gone/lost/destroyed.

Is it possible to find the last few owners and trace it that way?

You may need to find other paperwork and apply it to this airplane.

Give me a call if you would like.

'wow, that's a challange. The only ties between the engine (if known to
be original) would be the original airframe log(gone), the original
weight and balance report, and the original application for
airworthiness. The last two documents would be buried deep in OK city
but filed under the airframe identification. Daunting indeed.
Without a shred of info as you indicate leads one to wonder...how do
you know it's a 46? I don't know but '41's are identical aren't they?
Couldn't it be a de-mil'd UC-61...this could explain lack of papers.
For that matter it may not have been an "R"...could have been a W
changed over eons ago when all the correct parts were available.
It's a long shot but many older aircraft have serial or registration
scribed inside some fairings and such. This was done by some factories
after fitment and prior to paint, also mechanics often did this for
easy reassembly.
