'Could someone give me a rundown on the type of main gear brakes used on
a F-24, please? I hear of tube type expander brakes, yet on that excellent restoration
site : http://www.fairchildnc19143restoration.com/ , I see conventional looking drum brakes.

Forgive me, but I've forgotten the lad's name that hosts that very valuable site and I don't see
his name on it anywhere. Thanks..

'Davis,

The hays expander tube brake system was standard on the F24's. There have
been Cleveland brake conversions done on both the F24's and PT's. That is
what you saw.

'David,

The brakes on Tom Downey's 1937 24G are cable actuated drum brakes -
much like motorcycle brakes. Fairchild went to expander tube actuated
brakes a few years later. You can see the actuating lever that the cable
attaches to peeking over the lower right edge of the wheel in his
picture of the hub with brake shoes.

Someone else will have to fill in how the much more common expander tube
brakes work -- I have the same mechanical brakes as Tom.
