'long story short,, engine was dropped today,, one of the nuts on the
camshaft housing cover was the pressure point (one of the nuts
holding the scavenge tube) and now the cover is cracked and leaking
oil.

2 questions,

1. I have another engine that I can take a cover off of will this be
okay. Will I need a new gasket? 9looking in OH manual and can't find
a reference to a gasket.

2. Can the cracked cover be repaired with a weld?

thanks

Mike'

'1. Should be OK to replace with another cover. No gasket, silk
thread and sealant.

2. It probably can't be welded. I believe most are magnesium,
although I seem to recall that some were aluminum.

'Unsure as to why many people think Mag cannot be welded. I have
successfully TIG welded many mag chainsaw housings (dropped out of
trees quite often) and Halibrand quick change stockcar rear ends.
Robert Finch states quite the same in his book "Performance Welding".
He wrote the welding section in the new 43.13b. It welds very much
like aluminum. Take it to a reputable TIG welder. As to the legality
and structural soundness and the pending paperwork... well, you are
on your own! I would swap the spare one on.

'I stand corrected on the magnesium welding. Guess I just assumed
without digging into it. Since it's the cover it doesn't take much
load, sounds like your mostly just restoring it so it doesn't leak.
Maybe just fine.
