Ranger and Warner Bushings

This is the latest and greatest for Ranger and Warner engine bushings.
I have sent this info to John for posting in the Flyer.
Ranger Bushings:
I have been working with LORD Corp. for a year, no progress, moving
on. I have been in contact with Southland Manufacturing of New
Jersey. I have provided them with the LORD drawing J-1303-A and
Ranger drawing 8058 along with an un-airworthy bushing. Southland
will start producing replacement rubber on an as ordered basis. No
bench stock. In order to keep the cost down, all owners can send
their undamaged engine bushings to Southland for rework with new
rubber. The steel bushing cannot be damaged during removal, see
below. The associated cost of machining the steel bushings will drive
the cost up to a point where he cannot produce within a reasonable
cost. Units will not be FAA/PMA approved. They should be classified
as an owner produced/provided part. Southland will try and keep the
cost to $60.00 US per unit. I am sending 4 units to him for rework.
We will see how it turns out cost wise. Southland has been producing
Jacobs, P&W, and Lycoming round engine mounts for years. They come
very highly recommended, have been in business for 30 years.
Removal of bushing to prevent damage. If the inside bushing is
damaged by hammering, they will be rejected. To remove, simply heat
the aluminum engine mount with a propane torch or similar. Keep the
flame to an oxidation flame, "No blue flame" near the part. Heat the
mount evenly, 360 degrees around. Insert an old bolt with large area
washer and tap it out with a hammer or use an Arbor press. Send the
engine bushing to the address below.

Warner Bushings (165 &185):
At the present time Rare Aircraft (Roy Redman) has contracted with
Southland to produce the molds for the Warner 165/185 mounts. The
tooling cost as you know is not cheap. Southland is still asking for
the LORD/Warner drawing. If you know where one is, please let me or
the Fairchild Club know. Southland is going to make the best guess as
to rubber specs very similar to the Jacobs and Lycoming radial
engines. These bushings will not be cheap, possibly $600.00 per
complete set until the tooling is paid off. The owner is trying to
recoup his tooling cost. The tooling will belong to Rare Aircraft.
All orders should go thru Rare Aircraft. Again these units will not
be FAA/PMA approved. Owner will be responsible to ensure they meet
the classification of owner produced/provided part.

Melvyn Hiscock of England, owner of a Warner 145 powered Rearwin had
molds made to fabricate new Warner 145 bushing. Again these units
will not be FAA/PMA approved. Owner will be responsible to ensure
they meet the classification of owner produced/provided part.
