Rough Mag Check

'Bought an F24R-9 recently (Walt Albert's beautiful old bird) and have
a question about the left mag drop on runup. When checking the left
side mag it always runs rough. I lean the mixture and check again
and things are much better. The left side is the intake plugs side,
so removed and cleaned all plugs. Found, not surprisingly, that #6
was wet with oil. On the next runup, no change...still rough on the
left. Is this simply the nature of the Ranger or is there something
else I can do to eliminate this problem?

'Have you swapped the mag wires from side to side to see if the roughness
follows. You could have a bad plug wire. Another idea is to use a new wire
on the #6 as that might be the reason for the oily plug. Have you swapped
plugs from side to side? Try swapped the #6 plugs. Again if the problem
switches sides, then you know you have a bad plug.

'What model engine (175 or 200) and how many hours? I
had a 200 that did that. Had over 700 hours on it.
We took it apart at restoration time (a PT-26), put it
back on and it broke in at five hours. Rings make a
difference.

'FYI for the person with the mag drop. Do a cold cylinder check. To do this run the engine when it is cold ( meaning the first run of the day) on the rough running mag for one minute at 600-800 RPM, shut it down and touch each cylinder head to see which ones are cold. If you find a cold cyl. ck the plug and the plug wire. The plug wire can be best checked using a high tension lead tester.
