Do you have the whole tailwheel assembly for a PT-19? I've had mine
repaired twice by two different people, and it still shimmys after a
combined total of 30 landings (15 landings after the first repair and 15
after the second repair). I've given up and am looking for another
assembly.

'Robert,

I only have the fork. I do have an F24R here with a new old stock complete assembly. It is very difficult to get to turn on the ground 9even by hand) yet it still shimmies a little. I put the first 4 landings on it and it started on the 3rd one. Fairchilds!

I know what you mean. It get's really discouraging. I now have a tailwheel
assembly with $960.00 worth of shimmy work done, and I only got 30 landings
out of it, which makes the price per landing pretty steep :o).

Hi Cy. I've experimented with 15 to 60 psi., in 5 psi increments. I
think I just have a bad unit. I'm using the Russ conversion tailwheel, but
have put my old tire back on for an experiment, and it also shimmyed (sp?).

'I have had great luck with Russ's conversion eleminating most of the shimmy if the strut bushings and such are good and tight. I think the tailwheel assembly is installed at the wrong angle in the Fairchilds.

But what do I know. I have not cured it either.

For what it's worth.

I think it should have been designed with more sweep back myself. I guess
these airplanes were made to TO and land on dirt and grass stripes back
then, and that seems to be the overall cure.

'Another source of Tail Wheel shimmy is when the rudder and the tail wheel
are not in alignment. Don't know if this is possible with a Fairchild.

'Robert,

Contact John Ferrero at J & C aircraft. He has rebuilt PT tailwheel
assemblys. The PT has enough castor but you have to rebuild the entire
assembly including the bushings in the fuselage attachment points. This is
also addressed in Herb Puckets book
