'David,
I welcome you as a new member.
For paint, Fairchild Flyer, Spring 2000 Vol 12 #2 calls out. Fairchild
drawing 40468 titled Exterior Colors and markings. (The CD Rom has the
drawing) Base color Stinson Red, trim color Diana Cream, Base color Insignia
Red, trim color Aircraft Gray, Base color Loening yellow, trim color Stinson
Green. Colors were based on Berry Brothers Color chart. I still have one from
the 40's.
As for rust, carefully use a sharp Awl to inspect the longerons. Keep the
sandblasting to a min. Use glass beads if you must. Best way is to use
Pressure Baking soda method. Dye check landing gear attach fittings. Have the
gear legs Magnfluxed, Tig weld or oxy, reheat treat to 180,000 psi. Basically
comply with AD note 45-50-09 SB 41-8. Prep fuselage with acid etch. Prime
with a good two part epoxy. Finish off with a Poly Paint with harder or go
powder coat process. The int of the cabin, I finish off with straight Enamel
to keep the glare down. You may be able to match the trim finish by searching
for remains. Tube treatment, I have switched to ACF-50 Penetration Oil. Same
stuff the US Navy has been using for years. It penetrates the metal, forcing
the moisture out. You must do this after you finish your top coats.
Otherwise, you must wait about 90 days before paint. The oil will come to the
surface of the tubing. Wonderful stuff, much better than the old standard
Boiled Linseed oil.
If you have not ordered you Fairchild CD Rom, do so. Lots of data is there to
assist you in your rebuild. Send $40.00 US to John Berendt. Also order all
the Fairchild Flyers, the index to the Tech Tips is on Yahoo Files and also
on the CD. I keep it updated.
Lots more tips, but I would be typing for days. We are trying to document all
that we can.
