'Hi Folks,

I'm new to this list (but not new to Fairchilds!). I'm currently
researching USAAF serial numbers and trying to tie them to any
currently registered aircraft. Having gleaned the register through
landings.com, I have found a number of F24R-46A's listed. The TCDS
lists these models as USAAF aircraft. What I want to know is are
these aircraft F24R-46's (normally 175 hp 6-440-C2) a field approved
upgrade to the 200 hp 6-440-C5 or are these honest to gosh civilian
conversions of the UC-61K series? My intentions are to acquire an
F24R-46A (UC-61K) with an Army acceptance dataplate for restoration as
an authentic military aircraft. Sounds like a tall order, eh?'

As you have stated the TC A-706 states 24R46A (Army UC-61K). Legaly when you take a 24R46 and upgrade the HP to 200 (6-440-C5) you do not change the Data Plate or the Legal paperwork to the 24R46A, a log book entry and possible FAA 337 action. Serial Nos. eligible for clear definition of a 24R46A are SN R46-101 and up, which tells you nothing. Mine is a 24R46 S/N R46-181 and is a Civ 175 Ranger. Was at one time a 200hp prior to Eng swap back in 1954 to a new 175hp surplus engine.

You will need to contact each owner or them you to find out if there aircraft was a true warbird. You will find that some of the 24R46As on the Reg List are in fact 24R46 converted.

Fairchild after the war came out with the "A" model F24. They were listed
as F24R46A's The only difference was the 200 hp verses the 175 hp. TheArmy
did use the 200hp and the 175 hp Ranger. They were both UC61K's I have a
46RA.

He has a lot of experience in getting info from the Maxwell AFB
archives.

That is what I figured, John. A-706 shows:
"Serial Nos. eligible
R46-101 and up and all AAF Nos. of Model UC-61K. Use
manufacturer's numbers when available."
So any F24R-46A with an R46-XXX number is a civilian
airframe with a 6440-C5 engine. I have yet to find
the UC-61K S/N's. I assume I'll be contacting Maxwell
AFB for those.

Thanks for the link Jamie. The data plate,
registration and airworthiness are not changed but a
337 Major Alteration on the airframe for installation
of a 6440-C5 is required. Previous approval from the
local FAA office is required (FAA Form 337 Block 3)
before any work is started. Since approved data is
being used (A-706), a change to the model number
(F24R-46A) is noted on the 337. Once the aircraft is
returned to service, this 337 becomes a permanent
aircraft record.

I found a web site that lists all military aircraft
serial numbers and have the information. Each
aircraft produced for the USAAF and Lend Lease have a
record card that can be acquired from Maxwell AFB.
That is probably the only way I can get a
manufacturers serial number and tie it to the USAAF
numbers. Then I go through the current aircraft
registrations to see what is out there. Whew! There
were two I know of that were in Wisconsin but they
have since been sold (I found about those too late!)
but my brother Mark got pictures of these aircraft
with Army plates! Where are they now?

Thanks Cliff, I just got a message from Tony. We have
used Maxwell for a number of PT-19, -26 projects so it
is a good source.

So, shouldn't this also be "required" for the installation of a 6440-C5 in
a PT-19?
