Manuals for Magnetos.

Post by robert Etter »

'I was looking through some stuff that I have on the shelf and found, according to a June 1999 catalog, for $17.90, that the VMN7DF5 Magneto manual-parts & overhaul can be obtained from:
Radial Engines, LTD.
9550 Seward Rd.
Guthrie, Ok
73044
(405)433-2263 Fax (405)433-2202
www.radialengines.com

They normally do Continental, Lycoming, & Jacobs radial aircraft engines.
They have, according to the catalog, they have overhauled magnetos and both 10-5510-Z & 10-5511-Z Mag blocks (Left & Right) New. Price at the time of the catalog was printed was $85.25.

I am not sure where, but I think that I bought my SF4RN, SF6LM, SF6RN & SR6LN overhaul Manual from El Reno or Univair. One little detail that I remember from the experience with the SF4RN-8 that I had on my old Cub, which is the same family as the SF6RN that is used on the Rangers, was if you do not the 400hr overhaul by the book, you are asking for problems. I remember that before I overhauled the magnetos, the engine had a very pronounced howl at idle RPM's. Once the engine RPM was raised to something above 1,000 RPM's, the howl ceased. I did learn during the tear-down for overhaul, that the distributor axle bushings were dry and worn. After it was replace and lubricated at regular intervals, I never heard the howl on that engine again. When I hear that howl now, I know that someone is using the Bendix SF4 or SF6 and the didn't do a 400 hr overhaul or may be over due for one.
After I had sold the Cub, and around the post 1200hr. time frame, they did what they thought was a good enough overhaul of the magneto. Then the magneto started to howl. They went through a near complete tear-down of an A-65, before the found the problem with the mags.
Just a few words that may save someone much heart ache.

Bob

'I talked to Steve Currey of Radial Engines Limited at Oshkosh last week and
asked him about the VMN manuals. He confirmed that he does have them for
about 20 bucks apiece, and he's also got many more mag parts that aren't
listed in the catalog - just call. Steve's a high-quality guy and I've
always had good experiences doing business with him.

Another outfit that could probably help is Savage Magneto in Oakland,
California.
