'I've tried a couple of intercoms, and haven't been satisfied yet. One was a
small little gizmo which didn't seem to sork well, plus the knobs were in
between the four plugs, making it hard to adjust properly anyway. I then
tried a system called a DRE, which was allegedly made for open cockpits, but
haven't been able to get it tuned in yet either. The VOX can't be adjusted
above the noise. I use DCs with the Electric mike.

What do you guys like?

Last year I had to replace the intercom in my F-21 Taylorcraft, which is
the noisiest damn cockpit you've ever sat in. My original unit was a
David Clark, which was being swamped by stray RF (apparently a common
problem in fabric aircraft without a metal airframe to shield them from
the transmit antenna.) My avionics guy suggested a PS Engineering
PM-1000 unit. It's available with a high ambiant noise option VOX
circuit, which I added (this option doesn't show up in the Aircraft
Spruce catalog, but its available and not too expensive). It works very
well.

I also sprang for the digital recorder option, which records the last 60
seconds of whatever you've received and plays it back a snippet at a
time (most recent first) at the push of a button. Great feature; really
eliminates the "what'd he say?". It was almost worth replacing the
intercom just for that feature.

'The problem may be with the electret mics. I've had a lot of problems in the past and found that it was necessary to use mics that have an adjustable gain control. I've had success with the DC dynamic mics on the 10-30 headset. Believe it or not, the gain must be turned way down so that the mic isn't picking up the background noise. You have to speak in a firm clear voice, but your voice becomes the main thing that the mic picks up. I've got a sigtronics spa 400N (for high noise environments) intgercom in the 24 now and it is working well. My biggest problem was generator noise on the Comm radio but I've gone to an alternator and things are looking up. There are a number of headsets out there now with the adjustable gain mics. See if you can borrow one and see if it will make a diff.
