Ranger / Hartzell power settings (& introduction)

'Hello, fellow Fairchild lovers:

My name is Dan Michael and I am the pilot and guardian of
F24R46A NC81323, based in Chicago, USA. I am delighted to
discover this e-mail group since I am new to Fairchilds and have
many questions that I hope some of you more experienced
people can help answer (and offload the barrage I was about to
send to John Berendt!).

My aircraft is equipped with the Hartzell Hydroselective propeller.
Although this prop is approved for the Fairchild, I have never
seen any instructions for its operation. The aircraft manual
doesnt refer to it and the type certificate only notes takeoff power
rating (2450 rpm, 1min), max continuous (2300 rpm), and static
runup (2210 +- 50 rpm).

Does anyone have manifold pressure / rpm power setting
information for this configuration?

You have a good prop, but you will need to be careful on the maintance or trouble will start. Give Tom Goodlett a call in Texas. He has been operating one for 19 years. Tom also got with the Hartzell shop people that use to work on them, most of them are dead or lost. Grease application is a big factor for proper operation. Tom's number is 817-790-3190. Tom lives just south of Fort Worth. He is getting the motorhome ready for Sun-N-Fun, so he is still home. Tell him I sent you.

As for operation, 2450 is redline, same as a Aeromatic. Operation is simple. Keep it square as possible. The old Ranger Reps, stated don't go over Square on a continuous basis, burned pistons and such. The one I flew a few weeks ago got along at 2150/21 inches at cruise of around 115.

'I had a C8F built by Lee Hurry. Which was equipped with a Hartzel
selective prop and it worked great. The biggest and most mandatory
maintenance was to change the diaphragm biannually. If you don't you will
land at some place with the windscreen opaque with oil! It is a great prop
for the 24, I ran mine 2250 square to Blacksburg to Key West, never had a
minutes problem except at Holmstead FL with a blown diaphragm, I always kept
a spare! I would like to have a copy of the paperwork as I gave mine up
when I sold the aircraft, which is the 24 that ended up in Saudi, destroyed
due to circumstances following a forced landing.
