'Just to throw in my 2 cents, I do like working with the Weldwood Plastic Resin glue. Easy to measure and mix, clean-up is easy, pot life is good, but it need to have a good joint fit. I used it on some non-airplane stuff where the joint fit was not very good. It won't make up for poor workmanship. I have 30 year old ribs I did with Plastic resin that look good. One rib was wet for a couple days, and it didn't seem to bother the joint. It is now wall decoration because of water staining.
On the wing and fuselage wood that I have removed over the last 20 years, I didn't find much varnish. Why, I don't know. Too much thinning?
The metal for step plates. Several years ago, I found some real nice mini-diamond plate, soft aluminum, but you will need to shop around. Some of it isn't cheap. You could be talking several hundred for a sheet. I think I paid about $15.00 or more per square foot. I know I paid too much for it. I went for the bird in hand. Later, I saw it much cheaper somewhere. I don't know where it was, that was 15 years ago. I remanufactured all the aluminum pieces in and around the cabin, so everything matches. After a few mistakes, I learned that it really wasn't difficult at all.
