I had the same behavior with the Grimes ST-250 in my F24. If the
light illuminates, then the problem must be internal to the unit. In
my case the problem was that the phenolic (?) board on which the
motor limit switches mount had broken which prevented their
operation. I was able to locate a used switch assembly that fixed
the problem, but the reed switches are very simple and could probably
be repaired without too much difficulty. The switches are operated
by a couple of cams that are swaged to the shaft; if the cams are
broken or are loose, their repair might require more skillful work.
I also disassembled the gearbox, cleaned out the old solidified
grease, and relubricated it. Upon reassembling the motor and gearbox
assembly, I discovered that I had to carefully align the various
pieces while tightening the screws to prevent the gears from binding
-- the screws alone did not suffice to properly align the various
subassemblies.
Note: To remove the light from the wing after removing the external
mounting ring, I had to remove the end cover and turn the motor shaft
by hand (well, by drill, actually) in order to extend the light and
remove it through the cutout in the wing.
In general, it didnt seem that difficult to repair, although I
understand the reliability of this unit can be underwhelming.
